Why We Travel

Travel is more than simply seeing new places. It is about the moments we experience along the way—the people we meet, the cultures we encounter, and the unexpected details that cause us to stop and look a little longer.

For me, the simple answer to why we travel is discovery. Travel allows us to step into the world of other people, cultures, places, and languages. It broadens our view of the world while helping us learn more about ourselves. History and places we have studied or read about become real.

Travel can mean exploring the other side of the region where we live or experiencing a place thousands of miles from home. What matters are the encounters and observations along the way—the people, places, cultures, and small moments that stay with us. I think of these as “Travel Moments.”

Photography gives me a way to preserve those moments and is itself a method of discovery. These photographs and stories are not simply records of where I have been, but a way to share some of those discoveries with others.

Perhaps the greatest lesson from my years of travel is how much we have in common. Regardless of background, faith tradition, language, or culture, I have found that most people are kind and welcoming. They want many of the same things we do—a meaningful life and the hope of something better for their children.

Travel helps us appreciate both our similarities and our differences. It gives us greater respect for other people and cultures and, occasionally, allows us to see our own lives a little differently.

That, for me, is why we travel.

A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY

Travel Moments

Travel Moments are those small slices of life we observe or experience along the way—the moments that may seem ordinary at the time but somehow stay with us for years.

They can be an encounter with a street vendor near the Eiffel Tower, sharing mint tea offered by a Moroccan family in their home, or simply watching everyday life unfold in a place far from our own. They can happen during a two-week journey through Egypt or a four-hour port call on a Greek island. Each experience is different, but each is authentic and meaningful.

Photography gives me a way to capture these Travel Moments. It encourages me to slow down, observe more carefully, and notice the details I might otherwise pass by. The photographs are not just about documenting where I have traveled, but about preserving something of what I experienced while I was there.

Through photography and stories, Travel Moments is my way of sharing those experiences and some of the reasons I continue to explore the world.

In the end, it is not simply where we have been that matters. It is what we walk away with.
